My husband John and I moved to Shanghai in December 2003. Weary of the rat race in DC, we sought a big change. With our foreign language capabilities limited to Mandarin (his level elementary, my level intermediate), our choices narrowed quickly to China or Taiwan. After reading all that propaganda about Shanghai, we determined this was THE place to be!
Sure, we had qualms about relocating our pups, Remy and Martin.
The Chinese aren’t
exactly pet-obsessed like the Europeans or North Americans (at least
not yet!). Still, we couldn't let our dogs dictate our lives. As Caesar
Millan insists,
"They’re just dogs!"
The process wasn’t going to be easy, but our dogs were moving with us! Fast forward one and a half years. At an American Women's Club of Shanghai meeting in February 2005, I found myself in the company of three other dog owners! Forget networking, I just wanted to talk about our pooches. After some convincing from John, I decided it was time for StarPups*Shanghai.
